Personal Skills Development - Cert Ed Module 2 - U2586894
About Me
I am an Electrical Installation tutor at York College, teaching Level 2 and Level 3 learners studying vocational electrical qualifications. Before entering education, I worked within the electrical industry, which provided me with practical experience that now informs my teaching practice. Transitioning from industry into teaching required developing new pedagogical skills alongside my subject expertise. One area that quickly became apparent was the importance of effective questioning within lessons. In my early teaching practice I often relied on closed questions that simply confirmed whether learners understood instructions. While useful for checking basic knowledge, this approach did not always encourage deeper thinking or allow learners to explain their reasoning. Through my CertEd studies and classroom experience, I began to recognise that questioning can play a significant role in promoting engagement, checking understanding and supporting deeper learning in vocational education.
About This Project
This website presents my Personal Skills Development project completed as part of the Certificate in Education programme. The focus of the project is the development of effective questioning techniques within my teaching practice. Questioning is recognised as an important pedagogical strategy that can be used to check understanding, promote learner participation and encourage deeper thinking.
The project explores the rationale for focusing on questioning, the methods used to develop this skill and the knowledge and insights gained throughout the process. It also reflects on how questioning techniques have been implemented within my electrical installation teaching and considers the impact this development has had on learner engagement and understanding.
